The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs AM Motshekga, hereby in terms of Sections 6(4) and 6(5) of the General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance Act, 2001 (Act No. 58 of 2001), invite person(s), role players or organisations that are actively involved in General and Further Education and Training to nominate person(s) to be appointed to the Fifth Umalusi Council.
Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, has declared the South African examination system ready for the 2017 final examinations. Umalusi quality assures all exit point examinations in general and further education (NQF levels 1-4).
It has come to the attention of Umalusi and the Department of Higher Education and Training that many public HEls do not consider applicants whose entry qualification is the National Certificate (Vocational) as an NQF level 4 qualification rather than the well-known and recognised National Senior Certificate. In some cases this may be because the NC (VJ is not known or understood; in other cases it may be because the HEI has not recognised the NC(V) as meeting its [minimum] entry requirements.
Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of the late Mr Timothy Khoza (MP), a member of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, who passed away in a car accident earlier today. No one can comprehend the grief that the Khoza family must be feeling after this tragic loss of their loved one.
In terms of Section 24 of the National Qualifications Framework Act. Act 67 of 2008, Umalusiis the Quality Council for General and Further Education and Training. Section 27(h) (iii) of the act requires Umalusito ensure the development of such qualifications or part qualifications as are necessary for the sector.
On Wednesday, 22 February 2017, Umalusi presented a comprehensive status report to parliament's Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training regarding delays in the issuing of certificates for one of its qualifications, the National Certificate (Vocational) (NC(V)) which is offered at public and private TVET colleges. The presentation was part of a multi-stakeholder briefing to the portfolio committee by Umalusi, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the State Information Technology Agency (SITA).
